I may not say much, but being on the Smith tennis team means a lot to me. I would like to show my love and commitment to the team by serving as co-captain. I cannot imagine surviving my first year and being truly happy here without tennis and a team to fall back on. Prioritizing and focusing on the moment were extremely important for me in being able to balance academics and athletics. I believe that these actions would also help me serve as a team leader.

I am so glad to know all of you. It is amazing to see everyone’s improvement and I am proud to be a member of such a fantastic team. Especially this spring, I have seen everyone improve their tactical side of the game by making their opponents move side to side, up and back, and by mixing up the pace. The opponent was always kept guessing. Even though the spring has been tough with early morning practices, dealing with lack of court time, and switching between surface types, we were able to overcome the obstacles as a team. We came together when we needed to and had a lot of fun in the process with pranks, raps, friendly competitions during practice, and of course entertaining team dinners with topics such as The Zombie Factory and “You need to calm down!” I hope to continue to build a strong team bond through fun activities, while still being committed on the court.

While this time I do not have the great ending of a waitress asking for a Corona, I do want to say that Maggie and Mindy would also make amazing co-captains with Ally. No matter what, I am thrilled to be a member of the Smith tennis team.

Maggie Steiner   :

Smith College tennis is really important to me. Not only have I formed amazing friendships with the people on the team, and have amazing memories, but I also have learned how to work with a group of people to achieve the same goal.

Because of this, I would love to be your captain and I feel like I would fit the role. I am a leader and am comfortable in leadership positions; I already have experience of being a captain, as I was captain of my high school tennis team. I am a good communicator; I get along with all types of people, and get along well with all of you. I can take in the team’s feed back and can try to fulfill the team’s wishes to the best of my ability. As you all know, I am a laid back person, but I have no problem getting serious when the situation calls for it. I can establish boundaries between being a regular member of a team vs. the responsibility of being a captain.

If I am elected captain, I would make sure that everyone feels like they are an integral part of the team despite the ladder number. I also plan to include fun bonding activities with the whole team, both on and off the court. I want to continue Tacky Tennis, and rock climbing, which are two examples of activities that have brought the team together in a fun way. I would like to continue these activities with the addition of some new ones such as boating on Paradise Pond, and Secret Sisters. I want to make the team fun and united but at the same time competitive and committed.

Smith tennis means so much to me. As some of you might know, I had a very rough first year, and seriously considered not returning this past fall. At the last minute, I did decide to give it one more shot, because of the tennis team. Without the team, I would not be as happy here as I am. You all have made my college experience, thus far, so phenomenal, and I look forward to sharing two more years with all of you.

I want everyone to look back to their time on the Smith College tennis team with fond memories, and I think I could help to provide this.

Mindy Chu:

Smith Tennis has been a positive part of my Smith experience since my first day of college. In my two years on the team, I have developed wonderful friendships and have grown to love the sport and the challenges of working together with my teammates to improve our skills and mental toughness and to overcome conflict and adversity. I would love to serve as captain of the tennis team because I am dedicated to the team and to helping my teammates improve and develop as tennis players and as people.

I am a leader and I am also a team player. I feel that I have the ability to encourage my teammates to work together to accomplish our goals and to also have fun. At the same time, I would be able to work with the coaches to fulfill my responsibilities of captain to make the right decisions for the team. I am a communicator and a good listener. I like to have a good time, yet I also know how to focus to work towards and accomplish a goal. I am a fighter who will put out my best till the end. Through positive reinforcement and constructive feedback, I hope to encourage the team to adopt a strong drive to persevere, even through the toughest competition and challenge. As captain, I would encourage the team to voice any concerns they have so that I could work with Chris to make improvements. There are responsibilities of being a team member and responsibilities of being a captain and I would do my best to serve in both roles.

As captain, I hope to create a comfortable environment where we can focus on improving our skills as well as our bond with each other. Some things that I hope to start again is Secret Sisters. This past Fall I worked with Nawal to make little goodie bags for each team member with a personal note for our first match of the season. I also hope to start "Team Member of the Week" in which we have mystery clues to guess which teammate has been making contributions to the team or has made significant improvements in some aspect of her game. I enjoy doing little things like this to create an environment in which we are happy and motivated to do our best on the court.

Serving as captain is a big time commitment and I understand the role and duties I would have to fulfill. Now that I will have completed half of my major (including the difficult core classes), I will have more time to devote the team. I will be more available to carry out the responsibilities of an effective captain and dedicated team member.

Smith Tennis means a lot to me and I have had such a great experience getting to know you all on and off the tennis court. You are an exuberant bunch who has made my experience at Smith filled with laughter and happiness. Although there were many times this year that have been academically and personally challenging for me, I always looked forward to tennis practice to be surrounded by your enthusiasm and upbeat vibes. Serving as the captain would allow me to give back to the team the love, laughs and support it has given me these past two years. I hope that you are able to see me as a leader who can positively encourage and inspire the team to push through conflict and to also relax and have a good time. I would like each team member to feel like an important part of the team and I would do my best to create a supportive and challenging environment so that we can all have a rewarding and memorable experience.
